#### Play Sega Classic Consoles (Master System, Mega Drive, Mega CD, 32X and Saturn)

EmilDrive emulates your Sega classic consoles games: Master System, Game Gear, Mega Drive / Genesis, Mega CD / Sega CD, 32X and, new in 1.6, the Saturn. It is free and open source, with a clean, simple interface: pick a game from your library and play. Beyond Linux it's also available on Mac, Windows and Android.

New in 1.6

* Sega Saturn: play your discs from your folders or from your own computer or NAS, with sound, saves, save states, rewind and an optional sharper picture. It works with the standard pad, the analog pad and the light gun, (it needs the BIOS from your own Saturn). The Saturn is demanding: it runs best on a recent computer.
* Game Gear: the small screen in its own shape, with all its colours and stereo sound, and an optional handheld look.
* Sega CD 32X discs (experimental), with the BIOS from your own Mega CD.
* Controllers that set themselves up: a new Controls page (console, port, controller, buttons), and a new pad you plug in is offered a quick set-up. Light guns work with the mouse.
* Sync between your devices (experimental, off until you turn it on): pair two devices on your own network, with no account and no cloud, and your save states and saves follow you.
* Linux: sound that keeps up with the picture, and packages for ARM computers and, experimentally, RISC-V.
* Record the sound of a game, choose where games and saves are kept, and settings for one game only.

Made for using, not for fiddling

* Rewind: hold the button and the game runs backwards, up to ten seconds.
* Ghost challenges: race a ghost of your own best run.
* Automap: a map of everywhere you have been, in games that scroll.
* HD pixel art: sprites and backgrounds are enlarged separately, so edges stay sharp. Off until you turn it on.

Your game library

* Add the folders where you keep your games, or connect to a computer or NAS on your network (SFTP, SMB or FTP). Every file is checked by what is inside it, so only real games show up, whatever they are called.
* Search your games, and find the ones you played last under Recent.
* Save states for every game, and cheat codes you can switch on and off as you play.

Play your way

* Most USB and Bluetooth controllers work as soon as they are connected, with two players and any button changed as you like. The keyboard works too.
* Each game runs on the console it was made for, at the right speed (50 or 60 Hz).
* Mega CD: use the BIOS from your own console, or BIOS HLE (experimental): EmilDrive emulates what the BIOS does in its own code (high-level emulation), so no BIOS file is needed and none is included.

Optional extras, all off by default: remastered music replayed with sampled real instruments, and HD pixel art.

EmilDrive includes no games and no console BIOS files, and it does not fetch any: use games you own. Server passwords are kept in your desktop keyring (connect the snap's password-manager-service permission for that; otherwise they are kept in a private file). The snap is built for Intel/AMD and ARM computers and, experimentally, for RISC-V.

Sega, Mega Drive, Genesis, Mega CD, Sega CD, 32X, Master System, Game Gear and Saturn are trademarks of their owners; EmilDrive is not affiliated with or endorsed by them.

## Enable snaps on Kubuntu and install EmilDrive

Snaps are applications packaged with all their dependencies to run on all popular Linux distributions from a single build. They update automatically and roll back gracefully.

Snaps are discoverable and installable from the [Snap Store](https://snapcraft.io/store), an app store with an audience of millions.

### Enable snapd

If you’re running [Kubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus)](https://kubuntu.org/) or later, including [Kubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver)](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BionicBeaver/ReleaseNotes/Kubuntu) and [Kubuntu 18.10 (Cosmic Cuttlefish)](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CosmicCuttlefish/ReleaseNotes/Kubuntu), you don’t need to do anything. Snap is already installed and ready to go.

Versions of Kubuntu between [14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr)](https://kubuntu.org/news/kubuntu-14-04-lts) and [15.10 (Wily Werewolf)](https://kubuntu.org/news/kubuntu-15-10) don’t include *snap* by default, but *snap* can be installed from the command line as follows:

```
sudo apt update
sudo apt install snapd
```

### Install EmilDrive

To install EmilDrive, simply use the following command:

```
sudo snap install emildrive
```
