#### Edit Ubuntu Core Gadget Snap Packages

An editor for binary Gadget Snap packages to easily:

* change volume sizes of the seed and data partitions
* add/remove entries for auto connections of snaps in the image
* apply default configurations for snap packages seeded in the image
* manage kernel command-line parameters
* change the image file name in the volume definition
* manage interface slots the gadget provides
* Add an API Key for a dedicated store
* and indeed change the name and version of the snap itself

You can search and download existing gadget snaps from the global store with
the built in search function or import a local gadget snap file to edit it.

The gadget snap will only be re-packed after the edit and does not need to be
compiled from source (which provides full cross architecture support).

Note that the existing snap assertions will not match anymore after the edit
and you will have to either re-upload to the store to obtain a fresh signature
or use it with a "dangerous" model assertion for local image builds.

If you need to load/save gadget files to/from external media, you need to
connect the removable-media snap interface with:

```
 sudo snap connect gadget-editor:removable-media
```

## Enable snaps on Ubuntu and install Gadget Editor

Snaps are applications packaged with all their dependencies to run on all popular Linux distributions from a single build. They update automatically and roll back gracefully.

Snaps are discoverable and installable from the [Snap Store](https://snapcraft.io/store), an app store with an audience of millions.

### Enable snapd

If you’re running [Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus)](https://www.ubuntu.com/) or later, including [Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver)](https://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/features) and [Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa)](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FocalFossa/ReleaseNotes), you don’t need to do anything. Snap is already installed and ready to go.

For versions of Ubuntu between [14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr)](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TrustyTahr/ReleaseNotes) and [15.10 (Wily Werewolf)](https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WilyWerewolf/ReleaseNotes), as well as Ubuntu flavours that don’t include *snap* by default, *snap* can be installed from the Ubuntu Software Centre by searching for *snapd*.

Alternatively, snapd can be installed from the command line:

```
sudo apt update
sudo apt install snapd
```

Either log out and back in again, or restart your system, to ensure snap’s paths are updated correctly.
