Charge Stop manages your laptop's battery charge threshold — the percentage above which charging stops. Keeping it below 100% extends battery lifespan for laptops that spend most of their time plugged in.
## Quick start (CLI)
The command-line tool is the primary way to use Charge Stop:
$ charge-stop # show the current threshold
$ charge-stop 65 # stop charging at 65%
$ charge-stop history day # render battery activity as a chart
Run charge-stop history to see how your laptop has been used over time.
Plug-in, unplug, and charge cycles are rendered as color-coded terminal
charts for the current day (default), week (history week), or month
(history month). Try it:
$ charge-stop history
## How it works
A root daemon (charge-stopd) manages the sysfs battery attribute directly
and persists the setting so it survives reboots and suspend. Firmware on
many laptops resets the threshold across these events, but the daemon
re-applies the persisted value automatically (including after resume).
The CLI talks to the daemon over a UNIX domain socket using a small REST API:
## Snap interfaces (strict confinement)
The daemon uses the power-control interface to manage sysfs battery
attributes. Connect it manually before use:
$ sudo snap connect charge-stop:power-control

Snap can be installed from the command line on openSUSE Leap 15.x and Tumbleweed.
You need first add the snappy repository from the terminal. Choose the appropriate command depending on your installed openSUSE flavor.
Tumbleweed:
sudo zypper addrepo --refresh https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/system:/snappy/openSUSE_Tumbleweed snappy
Leap 15.x:
sudo zypper addrepo --refresh https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/system:/snappy/openSUSE_Leap_15.6 snappy
If needed, Swap out openSUSE_Leap_15. for, openSUSE_Leap_16.0 if you’re using a different version of openSUSE.
With the repository added, import its GPG key:
sudo zypper --gpg-auto-import-keys refresh
Finally, upgrade the package cache to include the new snappy repository:
sudo zypper dup --from snappy
Snap can now be installed with the following:
sudo zypper install snapd
You then need to either reboot, logout/login or source /etc/profile to have /snap/bin added to PATH.
Additionally, enable and start both the snapd and the snapd.apparmor services with the following commands:
sudo systemctl enable --now snapd
sudo systemctl enable --now snapd.apparmor
To install Charge Stop, simply use the following command:
sudo snap install charge-stop
