Docent is a self-study lab for Ceph. It runs three LXD virtual machines on your computer, lets you install MicroCeph on them step by step, and shows what the cluster does as it happens. In fault diagnosis it breaks something real, checks your fix by itself, and explains the cause when you give up.
Install
sudo snap install docent
sudo bash /snap/docent/current/docent-install.sh
The setup script installs LXD (or uses the one you already have), connects Docent to it over HTTPS on 127.0.0.1, creates the three VMs while showing their progress, and prints the web address when they are ready (http://127.0.0.1:8484). The first run takes 5 to 10 minutes.
Use
docent: print the web addresssudo docent status: web and VM statussudo docent watch: watch VMs being createdsudo docent destroy, then sudo docent create: start over with new VMssudo snap set docent vm-memory=3GiB vm-cpu=2: size of the next VMs
(without vm-cpu, each VM may use every CPU of the computer)sudo snap remove docent: remove Docent, its VMs and their disksWhere sudo does not look in /snap/bin (Arch, Fedora), type
sudo /snap/bin/docent instead.
Needs
An x86_64 Linux PC with virtualization turned on (/dev/kvm), 16GiB of memory (less works with smaller VMs) and about 30GiB of free disk.

Snaps are applications packaged with all their dependencies to run on all popular Linux distributions from a single build. They update automatically and roll back gracefully.
Snaps are discoverable and installable from the Snap Store, an app store with an audience of millions.
Snap can be installed from the command line on openSUSE Leap 15.x and Tumbleweed.
You need first add the snappy repository from the terminal. Choose the appropriate command depending on your installed openSUSE flavor.
Tumbleweed:
sudo zypper addrepo --refresh https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/system:/snappy/openSUSE_Tumbleweed snappy
Leap 15.x:
sudo zypper addrepo --refresh https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/system:/snappy/openSUSE_Leap_15.6 snappy
If needed, Swap out openSUSE_Leap_15. for, openSUSE_Leap_16.0 if you’re using a different version of openSUSE.
With the repository added, import its GPG key:
sudo zypper --gpg-auto-import-keys refresh
Finally, upgrade the package cache to include the new snappy repository:
sudo zypper dup --from snappy
Snap can now be installed with the following:
sudo zypper install snapd
You then need to either reboot, logout/login or source /etc/profile to have /snap/bin added to PATH.
Additionally, enable and start both the snapd and the snapd.apparmor services with the following commands:
sudo systemctl enable --now snapd
sudo systemctl enable --now snapd.apparmor
To install Docent, simply use the following command:
sudo snap install docent --edge
Browse and find snaps from the convenience of your desktop using the snap store snap.
