Moraine takes hard-linked snapshots of your files to a NAS or server over SSH, or to cloud/FTP/SMB/WebDAV/S3/Drive storage via rclone. Every run becomes its own timestamped snapshot where unchanged files share storage, so you keep full history at almost no extra disk cost. Restore whole snapshots or single files and prune old snapshots with a retention policy.
This snap ships the command-line client only. The GTK desktop app is distributed as a Flatpak, an AppImage and a .deb — see https://moraine.thern.io/distribution.html
rsync, the OpenSSH client and rclone are bundled, so every backend works.
Strict confinement. Your home directory's non-hidden files, external drives and every remote backend work out of the box. To let the bundled ssh use your keys, connect once:
snap connect moraine:ssh-keys
Backing up top-level dotfiles (~/.config, ~/.gnupg, …) is not yet available in
the snap — the personal-files interface it needs is awaiting store approval.
Until then use the .deb, Flatpak or AppImage if you back those up.
Schedule backups from a host systemd timer or cron running
snap run moraine backup <target> (the snap itself does not touch crontab).

Snaps are applications packaged with all their dependencies to run on all popular Linux distributions from a single build. They update automatically and roll back gracefully.
Snaps are discoverable and installable from the Snap Store, an app store with an audience of millions.
On Debian 9 (Stretch) and newer, snap can be installed directly from the command line:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install snapd
After this, install the snapd snap in order to get the latest snapd:
sudo snap install snapd
To install Moraine, simply use the following command:
sudo snap install moraine
Browse and find snaps from the convenience of your desktop using the snap store snap.
