Paperman

Paperman is an electronic filing cabinet: it scans paper into stacks of pages, filed in folders, and lets you view, arrange, annotate, print, search and send them. It reads and writes PDF, JPEG and its own variant of PaperPort's .max format.

Scanning, fast, from sheet-fed document scanners such as the Ricoh (formerly Fujitsu) fi-series, with presets:

• pages cut to the sheet, and straightened, by the scanner
• pages without colour stored as grey or mono, while a page with a coloured mark or note on it stays in colour
• blank pages found and left out
• sheets fed sideways turned upright, and sheets longer than any paper size, such as receipts, scanned whole
• a misfeed or jam waits to be cleared, and loses no pages

Filing:

• a simple view of stacks and pages, with previews
• move pages in and out of stacks, and stacks between folders
• print stacks and pages, including their annotations
• convert to and from PDF, JPEG and TIFF, and unfold scanned booklets
• read the text of pages (OCR) and search it
• email or copy files as PDF
• full undo and redo

Paperman's search server can keep papers on another machine, which the desktop shows beside its own, and which an Android or iPhone app can browse.

Setting up: to scan from a USB scanner, and to print to the machine's printers, connect the snap to them:

 sudo snap connect paperman:raw-usb
 sudo snap connect paperman:cups-control

A network scanner which is not found by searching the network can be named in a file of the back end's configuration, in ~/snap/paperman/common/sane.d, such as finet.conf with the address of a Ricoh fi-series scanner. See https://paperman.readthedocs.io
