Ubuntu 16.04 or later?

Install using the command line

sudo snap install vdr-server

This vdr-server snap ships with vdr and the vnsiserver plugin enabled by default. Optionally the streamdev (server), epgsearch, epgfixer, live and dvbapi plugins can be enabled and disabled at runtime using

 snap set vdr-server pluginname=true

All configuration files are stored in /var/snap/vdr-server/current/lib/

To allow vdr to work seameless please connect the dvb, hardware-observe, network-control and process-control interfaces of this snap.
